Vector - My Early Life

The first thought I can recall is of being next to my mother and my siblings and I squealing for attention. I can still remember how she patiently managed all of us. We were always vying for her attention while she had more useful things to do around the house. She worked in a house where they expected her to do her duties and she would get nothing but food and her necessities. The landlord also ensured that our requirements were also looked after.
I was made to understand that very soon we would have to leave home and fend for ourselves. The landlord could just look after us only for a short period till we could manage our business. Over the period of the next few days my siblings started leaving us to start their life in other households doing what we have been doing over the years - our family business of looking after households. My mother looked sad as one by one we left. I was the only one left and mother worried that probably I would not get a good job. It was becoming very difficult to find a good place to work in this current environment.
One evening, I was told by my mother that I had to go and meet my father whom I had not seen from the time I was born. He had his own job in another part of the world

and because of his busy schedule he never came to meet us. I kept asking her how I would recognize him for which she replied that someone would come from the place where father worked and take me there. My father had got a job for me in another household close to his place.
My mother and the landlord family were all very excited and I was excited too. I could hardly sleep the previous night and kept looking out of the window the whole day long. In the evening the family decked me up so that I looked good. At last I was getting a job. I was the best in the family. My mom used to keep saying that to me but the delay had started worrying her. That evening a young man came in his jeep and picked me up with my belongings and drove me away. Alas, I did not realize it at that time that it was the last time I would be seeing my mother. I could only whimper a short goodbye.
In the long journey, I kept wondering how my father looked like, how he would react on seeing me, how the job offer would be. Countless thoughts flitted through my mind as I dozed off. I woke up when the jeep jerked to a stop. I jumped off the jeep and walked into the house where I thought I was going to work. The door opened and I nearly jumped out of my skin with what I saw. There stood this huge guy with a gruff voice and his shoulder muscles rippling. He just barked an order at me, "Follow me" and walked inside the house. The guy who had come to pick me said in a soft voice "Don't worry chief, that’s your pop". I had thought my father was working in the house but the manner in which he had walked inside made me feel as if he owned the house. I was totally confused.
After the terrible drive through the summer day, the room in which I entered was a welcome relief. I slowly slid next to me father and sat in the cool corner where he sat. I was tired but still excited to see my father. I had so much to catch up, so much to know about the job I had got but my pop just sat in the corner and snoozed. I decided to wait for an opportune moment to ask him. In the meanwhile, my tired body told me to take rest while I could.

Late night, we both were sitting outside enjoying the summer breeze, when I heard my father speak in a gruff but loving voice. “Son”, he said, “you like all of us have a calling. You have come to this world for a purpose. I want you to be the best in what you are going to be. Over generations, our clan was herding sheep.

Then some decided to move into security business since we were built for that. I have been in this business for the past 7 years and the guy who picked you up has found a household which requires a guy like you. It’s a family with two young kids so be good and do your job well. I am sure you have a great life ahead of you”. The words reverberate in my ears even after all these years. Life has been great as my pop had predicted. I love my job and the family I work with.
